It was to this visionary gardener and distinguished botanist – born in 1624 in Charente – that Louis XIV entrusted the task of creating the vegetable and botanic gardens of the Château de Versailles.
Nearly four centuries later, his bronze statue still looks over the masterpiece he bestowed to us: the famous Potager du Roy.
With shared values of excellence and a spirit of innovation, we have chosen to pay tribute to this emblematic Charentais figure by gracing the elegant bottle of La Quintinye Vermouth Royal with a full-length portrait of Jean Baptiste de La Quintinye in front of his gardens.
Surrounding the royal fleur de lys emblem, the label is embellished with botanical drawings in the typical style of sixteenth-century plates. There is Armoise, an essential component in Vermouth, our house signature Fleur de Vigne, and Iris and Angelica roots which are characteristic plants of the Charente region.
From the German drink, wermut (meaning wormwood or sagebrush in German), this cooked wine was originally created for its medicinal properties derived from the healing qualities of cinchona and sagebrush. At the end of the sixteenth century, humanist and herbalist, Alessio Di Piemonte developed the Wermut Wein, a very popular drink among the court of Bavaria, and later in Italy when the Maison de Savoie moved to Turin. At the same time in France, Pineau des Charentes was born from a supposedly accidental mixture of grape must and Cognac brandy.
Some 450 years later, oenologist, master distiller and founder of Maison Villevert, Jean-Sébastien Robicquet, combines these centenary nectars to give birth to La Quintinye Vermouth Royal. It is created in the heart of the Charentais vineyards on the Villevert family property that dates as far back as the sixteenth century, and remains the company headquarters today.
Vermouth belongs to the category of “fortified and aromatised aperitif wines,” like Quinquina and Americano.
Vermouth is developed from a basic structure of grapes and wines, and is fortified with brandy. According to the European legislation, it must be made of at least 75% wine in order to even be considered Vermouth. This foundation is then aromatised with a blend of plants and spices unique to each brand, the most important ingredient of which is Artemisia.
Artemisia is a bushy perennial from the Asteraceae family with more than 400 varieties, including Artemisia absinthium (large wormwood), Artemisia dracunculus (tarragon), and Artemisia umbelliformis (white genepi).
